Ajrak

P1000239

Today I present a traditional item from Sind province of Pakistan. It is called ‘Ajrak’. Basically a cotton sheet which is block printed by hand. The colors are usually very bright and prints are just beautiful. The sheet is used as a shawl, both by men and women of the area. It is also produced in larger sizes and can by used as bed sheets, table cloth etc. It is wonderful to see all this craft.

My friends trying to decide which one not to buy:

And the shop owner, who was very polite and gave us good prices:

Hope you enjoy.

These photos very much remind me of Kutch, Gujarat that is also are known for their exquisite textiles. In fact, there is a village named Ajrakhpur in Kutch that is fully dedicated to block printing. Wonderful photo essay…and thanks for liking my blog!
